What are some ways your firm has gone "paperless" and/or "green" in the last few years? Billing, we no longer send out paper state- ments - everything is done via portals. Have you embraced cloud computing for your practice? Are you moving your clients to the cloud? Jason Lawhorn CPA.CITP.MAcc — 37 President & CEO, Lawhorn CPA Group, Inc. Knoxville, TN We have been using Thomson Reuters' Virtual Office since 2005. We heavily pro- mote the use of the portals in conjunction with that and have been very successful with it. All tax returns, financial statements and other service results are delivered in the client portals along with the corresponding billing. We also use other asp solutions to keep the clients books in the cloud as well with hosted QuickBooks and Peachtree primarily. How is cloud computing changing the ac- counting profession, and how concerned are you with the security issues related to cloud computing? Hobbies: Spending time with my Wife, 4 kids and 2 dogs. Cooking, Fishing, Playing & Writing Music I am personally not concerned with the se- curity, though I know that many people do have concerns. I believe if you choose the right partners you have a lot less to worry about. But cloud computing over all contin- ues to evolve in a good way. As a solution it has the ability to bring incredible efficacy to professionals and clients alike who have the knowl- edge to use it and the ability to build in the right pro- cesses and procedures for its use. The next big thing, I believe, is how we are going to integrate solutions across multiple platforms and across multiple data points in the cloud seamlessly. fice even when I shouldn't be. But I can of course work from anywhere I choose. What ONE piece of technology could you absolutely not live without? Definitely my iPad. Most of the work I do during the day from meeting notes, email, reading industry magazines, planning and keeping up with what is happening in the firm is done from that iPad, because it goes everywhere I do. I even got a real plush cover and sometimes use it as a pillow. What sports team/championship event do you absolutely refuse to miss? I'm not really that into sports… but I enjoy Tennessee Lady Vols basketball and UT football games when I go. What cell phone do you carry/use? Samsung Galaxy S 2 because I was robbed while on vacation and my wife gave me her old phone until the iPhone 5 comes out hopefully this fall. She of course suffered through learning how to use the Samsung Galaxy 3 when she "donated" her old one to me. Samsung's are great, I just prefer the iPhone and I can't wait until the new one comes out. How mobile are you regarding your work? How have mobile devices and apps impacted your productivity and work-life balance? Yes, Citrix has a great app for the iPad so that I can always be plugged into the of- I have an iPad 2. I waited forever to up- grade to the iPad 2 from the original iPad I was using (which isn't like me at all) and then five months later the iPad three came out. That's why I'm using an old phone and waiting on the iPhone 5. I also had a Kindle Fire until my stepdaughter lost hers and I had to give her mine. 19 | 2012 CPA Practice Advisor 40 Under 40 BACK TO PAGE 3
